Data sources
Know where each number came from.
PerBiscuit distinguishes direct label checks, third-party product records, user reports, research, assumptions and calculations.
Product labels
A package or clear package image is the preferred source for a product-specific label claim. A record should include the product variant, pack size, market, evidence-check date and, where possible, an image or stable reference.
FatSecret Platform API
The live US search and pack-to-serving ranking use FatSecret Platform API data. PerBiscuit records returned product and serving identifiers where available and identifies the retrieval date.
These records are third-party database data. They may be incomplete, stale or different from the package currently sold, so they are not described as direct label verification.
Open Food Facts
The repository contains imported Open Food Facts data. Open Food Facts is a collaborative database, and its documentation warns that contributed data may not be accurate, complete or reliable.
Database reuse is subject to the Open Database Licence terms. Product images have separate attribution and share-alike requirements. PerBiscuit retains the required attribution when this source is used.
User-reported PerBiscuit data
Submitted portions are reports tied to a product reference, quantity, unit, session and submission time. They are not assumed to represent all purchasers.
Public aggregates require the threshold and validation checks described in the methodology. Raw personal account data is outside the scope of public editorial datasets.
Regulations and guidance
US regulatory claims use primary sources such as the FDA serving-size guide, 21 CFR 101.9 and 21 CFR 101.12.
Research and surveys
No uncited study is used to convert an illustrative amount into a population claim. When research is added, PerBiscuit will identify the study population, design, date and relevant limitations.
Calculations and assumptions
PerBiscuit calculations link to a published formula. Assumptions and illustrative examples are labelled where they first appear and are kept separate from product and community data.
Current source gaps
Country and source details for the former static soft-drink examples could not be verified from the repository, so those product rows are not published. Independent verification of product-level Serving Match Scores is also pending because no qualifying sample is available.
